Both experienced runners and those who have never participated in a race before are invited to join the first FIT Challenge 5K Run/Walk on May 26.

The run starts at 10 a.m. at the Sandusky Register and will continue through the scenic Sandusky shoreline. Water stops will be included, as well as FIT Challenge stops for the FIT Challengers.

The entry fee was $15 by May 20; $18 after and the day of the race. T-shirts are available to all pre-registered entries and while supplies last on race day.

“There are a lot of 5ks in the area,” said Jason Werling, FIT brand manager. “They are fun for everyone involved and with our FIT Challengers just getting into 5Ks, I thought it would be a good idea to give them a chance to have their own.”

No one should feel self-conscious about running or walking in this 5K, Werling said. This is the first 5K for some of the five contestants competing in the FIT Challenge, a Register-sponsored weight-loss program.

“You don’t have to be in the FIT Challenge to participate. You can run on your own or with our FIT Challengers during the race through downtown Sandusky,” Werling said.

Awards will be given to the top overall male and female participants.

FIT Challenger Cole Cottier is participating. The junior in high school is the youngest contestant to ever participate in the FIT Challenge. He is down nearly 40 pounds since January.

“I am nervous about the 5K because this will be my first,” he said.

These nerves will be common among those doing a 5K for the first time. Those who want to participate in the FIT Challenge in the future should come out and give it a try, Werling said.

“Downtown Sandusky on a Saturday morning or afternoon is the perfect place for a 5K because there isn’t too much traffic and you have the waterfront, which is a great view for everybody during the 5K.”

Make checks payable to and send to: FIT Challenge 5K, Sandusky Register, 314 W. Market St., Sandusky, OH 44870.

“We want to try to get 100 participants. It is going to be tough on Memorial Day Weekend to pull people away from their grills,” Werling said, laughing.

What is the registration fee going towards?

Jason Werling

The registration fee is paying for the shirts and general costs of operating the 5k. If there are funds left over following the race, we will look into donating to a local charity.
