Typically, spotting a lion would launch anyone into a high-speed retreat.
But some local lions are urging area runners to strap on their sneakers and stride alongside them this weekend — all for a good cause.

The Sandusky Lions Club is hosting its first-ever Running with Lions fundraiser Saturday, an event aiming to collect cash in support of several charity projects.

“We really want to put this money back out into the community,” said Craig Hecht, the club’s vice president.

Participants can run in a traditional 5K race or a one-mile “fun run,” with both starting at 9 a.m. at Battery Park in downtown Sandusky.

Registration is $20 and begins at 8 a.m. The first 100 runners registered will receive a T-shirt, and the first, second and third place winners in multiple 5K age categories will receive medals. The overall race winner will also receive a plaque.

Programs and organizations benefiting from the Running with Lions races include: local charities, impoverished individuals, disaster relief efforts, student scholarships, a girls softball team, student of the month sponsorships, food baskets for local families during the holidays, and Buckeye Boys and Girls State sponsorships through the American Legion.

The Firelands Area Runners Club is assisting the Sandusky Lions Club with the event.
