With the late addition of a 5k in Fremont over the weekend and the Santa Hustle half marathon I reached my goal of 50 miles in the last three months of the year. Thank you to those who gave me a couple running options close to home.
The Jingle Bell 5k was a great race that started at the Hayes Presidential Center in Spiegel Grove, Fremont. Big snowflakes fell as we ran up and down a couple gradual hills. The Fremont Elite Runners did a great job managing the race and Fremont police kept the intersections free of traffic Saturday morning.
This year's Santa Hustle at Cedar Point's Castaway Bay had a different day of weather than last year's inaugural race. Last year it was 50 degrees and sunny. This year it was 20 degrees and windy, really windy. But what would you expect for a race on Sandusky Bay in December?
I opted for the half marathon this year and it was great to run over the causeway, through the snow-covered park, and back over the causeway for 13.1 miles. And I have to give a shout out to the volunteers who were supportive of all the runners throughout the course, especially the St. Mary Central Catholic group near the re-entrance to the park at about the 7-8 mile mark. You know who you are.
The wind and the weather kept Perkins firefighter Brian Hackenburg from finishing the 13.1 miles under the time needed for a world record, but the turnout in support for him was amazing and I don't think this will be the last you hear from Hackenburg and world records. Nice job Brian and to everyone who ran/biked with him.
