GO- Lake Erie Bluffs, Lake Metroparks

FIT Staff
Oct 5, 2013
Last weekend, the weather was beautiful. I couldn't stand to stay inside! I headed out on Sunday for Cleveland area to visit some friends. Afterwards, I hit up the Lake Erie Bluffs of Lake Metroparks.

Located in Perry Township, this 600 acre metropark contains essential wetlands, rolling meadows and crucial undeveloped Lake Erie beachfront. I'm a sucker for the water- river, lake, stream or pond. This beach showcases a natural lakefront- untouched by human developers. The sandy bluffs it offers are not only visually appealing but home to many native and rare vegetation.

Among this vegetation is the Fringed Gentian, Gentianopsis crinita. It grows along the sandy slopes created by the long gone glacier that shaped the Great Lakes. Luck was shining down, in the form of the sun. The fringed gentian only opens its spectacular blooms when the sun is out. It tends to stay closed up tight when the sky is overcast, looking like a twist of blue and purple construction paper.

Blooming it was, an entire bluff floored with the indigo firecracker of a flower, highlighted by the bursts of goldenrod. Just the sight was enough to catch your breath- how potent the physical effect nature can have on one! It's nothing short of phenomenal (to me at least) how this rare flower with it's white and purple-blue vertical striping and rebelliously frayed edges can change my entire view in a millisecond.

If you don't believe me, go see it for yourself. You can check out this ethereal beauty locally at the Castalia Quarry MetroPark. Or take a road trip along the lake. Stop often and plant your bare feet on the ground, look with your eyes, listen with your ears and let it write all over your heart.

Just go somewhere.
