Kirtan

FIT Staff
Jul 21, 2013

We are in for a local treat this Saturday, July 27th!

The Converging Paths Meditation Center and the House of Yin Yoga Studio are hosting Enchanted Hearts at 7pm at the House of Yin Yoga Studio, 607 Main Street in Huron, Ohio. Enchanted Hearts is a 7 member kirtan group from the Cleveland-Akron-Canton area of Ohio. The fee is a $10 donation. Bring a mat, blanket or pillow to sit on!

Kirtan is devotional chanting of certain sanskrit mantras or phrases. It is a mainstay practice in Bhakti Yoga. It is performed in a call and answer type format. The chanting is often accompanied by a harmonium, drums, tambourines and other instruments. Often a basket is passed around and anyone can choose what they want to play.

If you are not comfortable playing an instrument, just pass the basket! It is also perfectly acceptable to sit quietly and listen if you don't want to chant.

Sometimes quieting the mind is rough. Our lives are filled to the brim with obligations- family, friends, work and more. While most of these obligations are a privilage, they still may overwhelm and distract us at times. It can be difficult to shut down the hamster spinning on the wheel inside your head all by sitting quietly, closing your eyes and breathing deeply. Seriously? Some days that is just not enough! Kirtan or chanting is a wonderful alternative to quiet the mind. For me, chanting can almost immediately slow my breathing, focus my mind and calm my body.

So check out on Enchanted Hearts Kirtan in the player below and come out Saturday night to experience this practice in your own community!
